How to Prepare for a Recording Studio Session

The studio is not the place to learn your song. Run through your verses, hooks, and ad-libs out loud — not just in your head — at least a dozen times before the session. Practice with headphones, and practice without them. If you can perform your part cleanly three times in a row at home, you are ready to record it on the clock.

• Final, mixed-down instrumental as a WAV file (24-bit, 44.1kHz or 48kHz).
• BPM and song key written down — saves time when comping vocals or stacking harmonies.
• Two or three reference tracks you want the final mix to sound like.
• Lyrics printed or on a tablet (phone screens lock — bring a charger).

A focused vocal track for a single song typically takes 1–2 hours including warm-up, takes, and basic comping. Two songs is usually a 3-hour booking. Show up 10 minutes early so the clock starts on creative work, not setup. Sessions require at least 48 hours of advance notice and a 100% deposit to lock in.

• Your own in-ear monitors if you prefer them — studio cans are provided.
• A USB drive for stems and rough mixes to take home.
• Hard copies of any features' approvals if guests aren't in the room.

Sleep the night before. Hydrate the morning of — room-temp water, no dairy, no ice. Skip alcohol and limit caffeine for at least two hours before tracking vocals. Bring throat lozenges and a small snack. A clear head and a warm voice are the cheapest upgrades you can buy.
